A penalty with just six minutes remaining saw the Reds defeated at Stade Santander International by relegation-threatened visitors Hartpury.
Opposing skippers Jerry Sexton and Simon Linsell scored early tries, but then the game was deadlocked at 7-7 for more than an hour until Sam Leeming landed the crucial kick.
Hartpury moved off the bottom of the table, while the Reds stay third ahead of the trip to Richmond next weekend.
