Cornish away-day awaits Reds in Champ Cup semis

The Reds will travel to Penzance in early May after being paired with Cornish Pirates in the Championship Cup semi-finals.

By taking 29 points from a possible 30 in the pool stages, the Pirates ensured top seeding in the knock-out stages of this season’s cup, with Ealing Trailfinders (26 points) as second seeds, meaning both clubs have earned home ties. Doncaster Knights (23 points) were ranked third as a result of having won pool B, while the Reds (25 points) qualified fourth as best runners-up.

Results of the pool games, including the Reds' home win over Ealing earlier this month (pictured above by Rich Chapman), can be viewed HERE.

The two highest point scoring clubs play their semi-final at home, with the top points scorer playing the 4th, and the 2nd and 3rd ranked clubs paired together as follows:

* Cornish Pirates v Jersey Reds (1st v 4th place)
* Ealing Trailfinders v Doncaster Knights (2nd v 3rd place)

The semi-finals will take place over the weekend of 5-7 May, with [UPDATE] the Pirates v Reds game now confirmed to be taking place on Friday May 5th, with kick-off at 7.30pm. The date is at the start of the four-day holiday weekend in Jersey, which also features the Siam Cup games between Jersey and Guernsey on the Saturday, the Coronation of King Charles II on the same day and Liberation Day on Tuesday May 9th.

If there is a draw after 80 minutes in a Champ Cup knock-out game, extra time will take place consisting of 10 minutes each way. If the scores remain equal after extra time, the winner will be the team which has scored the most tries in the game (including extra time). If the scores are level and the number of tries scored is equal, a place-kick competition will determine the winner.

The Final of the Championship Cup takes place the weekend after the semi-finals, 12-14 May, and will be played at the home ground of the club with the best playing record in the semi-finals.  The RFU’s competitions team has stated that best playing record will be determined by points difference in the semi-final followed – if necessary – by points scored, try-count, red and yellow cards and – finally – a coin toss.
