U13s v Haywards Heath - 13th November13/11/2016
The U13’s second Sussex league game of the season was played on Sunday 11th November at Haywards Heath with a similar storyline from the previous week.
Whilst the Jersey club have embraced the RFU restructuring of age grade rugby and fielded teams of mixed ability, the first two Sussex teams the under 13’s have faced have probably been against the top two in Sussex with both fielding very strong full strength sides.
After an early morning start and long journey Jersey never really got going until well into the second half by which time the experienced Haywards Heath side had run in a number of scores. The tackling let the side down especially in the first half. Once they remembered how to tackle they came back into the game and pushed for the Haywards Heath line.
Once again prop Max Tennent made some storming runs and for most of the game the Jersey scrum was strong and stable which was pleasing to the coaches considering it was the first taste of games for props Josh Lambert and Callum Lee Hughes.
With a couple of injuries in the first half James Cannard filled in at scrum half and Max Bennett moved to full back. Both were involved in the best moments of the game for Jersey. PJ Dodge as Captain led the side with encouragement despite the scoreline and as with Shoreham the Jersey boys never let their heads drop.
In the first two games the coaching team have managed to give a game to 31 different players.
In January the fixtures are restructured based on the previous 3 fixtures and the games should be more evenly matched. With 7 more Sussex fixtures and host of touring teams visiting Jersey including London Welsh the under 13’s will have a large experienced squad to choose from.
The final score Haywards Heath 50 Jersey 0.
