Colts win at Pulborough 11-804/12/2016
MATCH REPORT - Pulborough 8 Jersey 11 (04/12/2016)
Jersey Colts fourth game of the season saw them enter the match mid table in the Sussex league playing against Pulborough who were placed third. It was going to be a hard day in the office for Jersey with Pulborough straight at them from the off. Jersey were in their own 22 for a considerable time as the Pulborough attack gained momentum and pressure, which translated in to a series of unfortunate errors by Jersey. Even when they were able to kick the ball away this was too easily scooped up by Pulborough and back they came again.
The battle of the packs was more evenly matched with Jersey’s technical nous and experience giving them a slight edge. A yellow card for a late tackle saw Jersey with a man in the bin, but team spirit and fortitude saw them ride out the 10 minutes with no points conceded.
Jersey at last started getting into the game. It was their turn to enjoy possession and dominance. At last a breakthrough with Jersey winning a penalty, which although at a difficult angle was converted to give Jersey a three point lead after 30 minutes. Just before the half time whistle Pulborough managed to go over the line to score a try. Unable to convert Pulborough finished the half with a slender of lead of 5 points to 3.
The halftime break gave Jersey Lead Coach Dave McCormick the opportunity to refocus the team by firmly setting out his expectations for the second half.
Jersey dug deep and showed great strength and determination which saw them begin to muscle out Pulborough whose discipline started to falter and showed signs of cracking as the errors racked up, which Jersey were happy to capitalise upon. From one such situation the ball was fed out to Dan De Miguel who burst through tackle after tackle, head down bulldozing his way to touch down in the corner, putting Jersey back into the lead 8-5.
Pulborough were not finished, it was time for Jersey to defend as their line was attacked. Jersey was resolute to a man and there was no way through. However this pressure did yield a penalty for Pulborough which they duly slotted over to make it 8 all with ten minutes to play.
It looked like the game was destined for a draw until a wonderful moment of Jersey pressure which was rewarded with a penalty which was duly converted to make the final score 11-8 to Jersey!! It was without doubt a game of highs and lows with both teams evenly matched. Both teams had some great opportunities to score tries. Jersey to their credit absorbed enormous periods of pressure. It was team spirit, resolve and to be honest “bloody mindedness” which saw Jersey through as victors.
This group is growing with each game and becoming a real force in Sussex – a well deserved win. No rest though next up 8th January when we play 2nd place Worthing.
