Jersey Reds 45 London Scottish 10

09/12/2017

Jersey Reds remain in control of pool 3 of this season's B&I Cup with a seven tries to one demoliton of London Scottish.

While the league match against London Scottish a month ago was a close-run affair that finished 20-15, the Cup encounter was less of a contest.

Fly-half Oli Bryant crossed for a try after just five minutes, and although the Exiles pulled three points back through a Tom Parton penalty, the Reds' powerful maul enabled hooker Nick Selway to claim two first-half scores.

Although Scottish had some spells of possession, they were unable to make much headway against a Red brick wall of a defence, and the penalty was one of the few forays into enemy territory. A penalty count of 5-14 over the 80 minutes gave another indication of the home side's dominance.

Reds' winger Josh Hodson had a try at the end of the first half disallowed for barging a defending player, but was not to be denied early in the second, taking a long pass from Brendan Cope and diving over. The home side scored three further tries, one to scrum-half Joel Dudley and two more to the pack: replacement Jack Macfarlane from a maul and Matt Rogerson's scrum push-over. Another replacement, Craig Holland, grabbed a consolation try for the visitors from the final play.

Head Coach Harvey Biljon was very pleased by the display.

"We'd spoken in the week about the importance of getting things right in this game and we were able to produce some exciting play on the back of a dominant set-piece platform, and get our just reward," he said. "We need to have the same focus and desire next weekend."

"We have more than a few injuries among our backs, and Oli Bryant's knee will have to be assessed early next week, but hopefully we'll have some players returning to action soon."

The Reds now have 15 points from three games to lead Yorkshire Carnegie by six points in the group standings. The big win looked at one stage that it might be a record, but in the end was short of the wins over Cardiff Blues Select last season (49-12 and 10-55) and the 52-12 win over Connacht Eagles the season before. The only disappointment was a crowd figure of 712, one of the lowest for a competitive fixture at St Peter for a long time.

Exiles Assistant Coach Jonathan Mills said: "We'd made a few changes and looked a bit disjointed. The boys worked hard but our application let us down and the penalties conceded meant plenty of opportunities for Jersey."

After the second leg of the back-to-back 'Cup 'series' against the Exiles in London next weekend, the Reds will stage their final home fixture of 2017 at Stade Santander International on Friday December 22nd, with Hartpury the visitors and Christmas jumpers, mulled wine, roast turkey and all the trimmings on the menu.

A superb three-win day for the Reds' adult sides, with the Athletic winning 47-17 over Richmond Saxons and Jersey Reds Women triumphant by 0-20 at Dorchester, Weymouth & Portland.
