U14s v Crowborough - 13th November13/11/2016
Crowborough was the second outing for the Reds U14 squad in the new Sussex waterfall competition. Sporting the new Ora kit, Jersey received the kick off, with both teams finding their feet, it was Jersey taking the early pressure and within 6 minutes Crowborough broke through on the wing and with the conversion Jersey were 7-0 down. Jersey were playing against a side that had a number of very good strong runners which at times ran through many tackles. A couple of changes were made and substitution for an injury helped reinvigorate the Jersey side. Good runs by Dan Worley and Danny Alves helped reduce the pressure we were under. During next 15 minutes Jersey were able to hold their own in most areas of play and scored a great break away try by Dan Worley. The introduction of Henry Dawson on the wing helped Jersey to close out their very fast winger. By half time Jersey were still in the game but needing to step up the tackling to avoid a landslide defeat.
The second half Jersey playing strongly up front and would have had a lot more advantage had the referee ensured the Crowborough backrow was not pouncing on our scrumhalf as he picked the ball up! However Dan Worley continued to have an excellent game and score another great try with a 50 yard run. John Brocken was tackling like a demon and was rewarded with a consolation try after some great footwork. Strong running from Crowborough continued to make a lot of ground and tries were scored too often!. , Final score Crowborough52 – 15.
Overall we were beaten by a side that had played a great deal of rugby together and were well drilled. The downside to the game was the number of injuries we picked up and most can be attributed to poor refereeing in the contact area.
